The way a Facebook proxy website works is that it acts as an intermediary source between the person and the server on which the website being contacted is hosted on. What happens is that a user sends a request to a proxy website which is then conveyed to the websites’ server. The reply that the proxy website receives is then sent the user’s computer. This creates the impression to the blocking software and the internet service provider that the user is viewing the proxy website but in reality he or she is visiting the website that was apparently blocked. In this way, proxy servers also give users that extra security by hiding their online activities from their internet service providers.

Among the websites that are commonly blocked in schools, workplaces and offices include sites such as Facebook, Blogspot, Orkut, Typepad, eBAy, Google News, YouTube, MySpace, MSN and Yahoo just to name a few. However among all these sites, the most commonly blocked website is Facebook. This is because it is the most used type of social network media. In countries such as Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan there is very limited access to mainstream and social media sites. Through a proxy website, blocked sites such as Facebook can be easily accessed. A proxy website enables the user to hide their location. It can be used to gain access to widely popular websites which in some countries is prohibited.
